Millennium, a Campuswide Cluster-of-Clusters
Matt Welsh
The UC Berkeley Millennium project aims to build a campus-wide
hierarchichal "intercluster" to support large-scale scientific
computation and visualization. A key aspect of this system is the
notion of a computational economy, in which market-based algorithms
are used to enable users (and system services) to buy, sell, and
trade resources to optimize for user satisfaction. Taking its initial
cues (and lessons) from the NOW project, the Millennium promises to answer
the question: "What happens when you drop six million bucks of Intel
equipment on a group of Berkeley grad students?"
