Evaluating the Virtual Interface Architecture for Clusters

Andrew Geweke and Philip Buonadonna

The Virtual Interface Architecture (VIA) is a proposed industry standard for user-level networking. Its goals are similar to those of Active Messages: low latency, low overhead, and high throughput. We implement VIA and measure its performance, using the results to draw conclusions about strengths and weaknesses of VIA. Finally, we propose some improvements to the specification.
